Wyoming Secretary of State Ed Murray announced his resignation on Friday, February 9th. In his media release, Murray stated, "After deep and profound contemplation, I am announcing my resignation as secretary of state, effective today" He said. "I step aside with peace and serenity in order that I may fully focus on what is most important in my life: my marriage, my family and my health."
The unexpected announcement came allegations of sexual misconduct came out from two women in December and January. One allegation was for an incident more than 30 years ago and the second was an incident 29 years ago. Reports from other media outlets say Murray strongly denied the first allegation and said he could not recall the second alleged incident. Murray said no one asked him to resign.
Deputy Secretary of State Karen Wheeler will lead the office in the interim until a new Secretary of State is appointed.
The procedure now is for the Wyoming Republican Party to submit the names of three people to Wyoming Governor Matt Mead, who will pick one to serve out the remainder of Murray’s term, which ends in January. Information will be forthcoming from the Republican Party for how interested parties can apply for the position.
