Sublette BOCES offered a free geology field trip on Saturday, Sept. 9th to view glacial and moraine geologic features near Pinedale. The field trip was led by Ron Worl, who was the head geologist for the USGS mapping of the Wind River Range. "If you’re looking for gold in the Wind River Mountains, sorry," he said. Apparently these are not the right kind of rock formations to contain significant deposits of precious mineral ores. Multiple cyclic glacial episodes over tens of thousands of years have impacted the topography around Pinedale and created the unique landscape and glacial features that surround Fremont Lake today.

Tall lateral glacial moraines lie on either side of Fremont Lake. These large berms were deposited by huge glaciers that once filled where Fremont Lake is today.
