Dangerous avalanche conditions exist in backcountry of western Wyoming
Backcountry snowmobilers and skiers advised to use extreme caution
January 13, 2017

Friday, January 13, 2017: Very dangerous avalanche conditions exist in the backcountry mountainous areas of western Wyoming. Soft wind slabs, formed by recent heavy snowfall and strong winds, exist at all elevations. Large snow slabs remain very sensitive to being triggered by backcountry snowmachine riders and skiers. On Thursday (Jan. 12), a skier was caught, carried and injured after triggering a slide that carried him through trees in steep terrain in No Name Canyon to the south of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Teton County Search and Rescue rescued the skier using a helicopter and short haul techniques. Do not allow sunny skies to affect behavior. There is great potential for dangerous deep slab avalanches to easily be triggered by backcountry recreationists (either by you or people around you that you get caught in). Be aware of getting caught down in avalanche slide paths that can carry deep snow far into treed areas.
