Mercury spill at Big Piney High School
Causes hazardous material spill response from Emergency Management

At 12:20 p.m. Wednesday February 27th the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a hazardous material spill at the Big Piney High School. The reporting party stated that approximately six ounces of mercury had been spilled. SCSO deputies, the Big Piney Fire Department, Big Piney EMS and Sublette County Emergency Management responded to the scene. The Teton County Emergency Management Coordinator, who was at a meeting at the Big Piney fire hall, also responded.

The accidental spill occurred in a storage room adjacent to the chemistry classroom. There was no impact to student safety and all necessary precautions are being taken. The spill has been reported to the Wyoming Office of Homeland Security and Regional Emergency Response Team #4 is responding to the school. Notification has also been made to the regional office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Centers for Disease Control and the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality.

Classes and activities at Big Piney High School continue as normal.
