Forest Service seeks public comment on Sherman Cattle & Horse Allotment grazing permit
November 10, 2011
The Big Piney Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest is conducting an environmental analysis of effects associated with term permitted livestock grazing on the Sherman Cattle & Horse Allotment.
Due to recent grizzly bear activity in the area, it was determined that analysis and disclosure of an Environmental Impact Statement were necessary to cover all the potentially significant issues of this proposal. Public comment is being solicited on the proposal. The Forest Service will use data and public input to determine whether livestock grazing will be authorized within the project area, and if so, under what conditions.
The Sherman Cattle & Horse Allotment is located approximately 35 miles northwest of Big Piney, on the east side of the Wyoming Range. It encompasses approximately 17,370 acres of National Forest system lands. The Proposed Action is to authorize continued livestock grazing between July 6th to September 20th for a maximum of 858 cow/calf pairs in the two pastures in the allotment. No new range improvements are proposed and the boundaries of the allotment are proposed to remain unchanged. Grizzly Bear Conservation Measures which would be required include food storage regulations and close monitoring of livestock.
Public comments are being accepted until Wednesday, November 30, 2011.
