BIG PINEY – The South Horse Fire was discovered Thursday, September 29 burning in the South Horse Creek drainage southeast of Prospect Peak on the Big Piney Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest.

The fire is approximately 41 acres burning in heavy timber with group tree torching and active fire behavior. The fire is human caused and is under investigation.

Currently the fire is being staffed by six firefighters from Teton Interagency Fire, a 10-person Flathead Hotshot crew, two Type 3 helicopters, and a 20-person handcrew scheduled to arrive Today (Friday, September 30, 2011). Additional firefighters and other resources may be assigned to the incident as fire activity increases or scaled back during quiet periods of the fire. Firefighters are using natural barriers to keep spread of the fire in check.

There are no closures associated with the incident at this time, but the closure status may change as fire activity increases. Hunters and recreationists to the area are advised to stay informed on current weather forecasts and fire behavior and have alternate routes planned. Numerous hazards exist, and visitors are encouraged to avoid being in or near the vicinity of the fire.

Other area fires include the Aspen Creek Fire on the Pinedale Ranger District. This fire is currently 95-acres burning in bug-killed timber on Muddy Ridge in the Big Sandy area. The Sawtooth Fire on the Big Piney District is ¼ acre north of Bondurant near Tosi Peak.

Visitors to public lands are reminded that unattended or abandoned campfires can easily escalate into wildfires. It is important that all warming and cooking fires are completely extinguished and cold to the touch before leaving a site. Campers and day users should never leave a fire unattended, and should always be prepared by having a water bucket and shovel on hand and ready for use.

For information about this fire call the Big Piney Ranger Station at 307-276-3375. For information on other fires burning on the Bridger-Teton National Forest and Grand Teton National Park, visit www.tetonfires.com.
