Preparedness month promotion launches September 1
by Sweetwater County Emergency Management
September 2, 2011

CHEYENNE, WYOMING - Preparedness Month is in September and local and state agencies are launching an awareness program to encourage residents to take steps now to prepare for disaster.

The "I’m prepared in Wyoming promotion" is a component of national preparedness month which is held each September and is designed to encourage Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, and communities.

The online promotion is open to Wyoming residents and once a preparedness tip is submitted or a video is watched and commented on the individual is entered to win one of more than 90 preparedness prizes.

The HollyFrontier Companies, formerly Frontier Refining, partnered with the Wyoming Citizen Corps program and donated a large portion of the prizes. Kevin Burke, vice president and refinery manager said they are pleased to be part of the promotion and involved in community preparedness.

"HollyFrontier is proud to be a continuing supporter and contributor to the community," Burke said. "We are excited to be a part of a statewide awareness and educational program and encourage residents to participate and take steps to prepare."

Guy Cameron, director, Wyoming Office of Homeland Security, said the program is the first of its kind in Wyoming and is a unique and exciting way to spread the preparedness message.

"We've never conducted an awareness program like this before," Cameron said "This Internet-based promotion is a way to reach the entire state. Preparedness starts with families being involved and making a plan and this promotion will give them the tools they need to start that process."

The promotion will be active from Sept. 1 to Sept. 30 and can be accessed at http://wyohomelandsecurity.state.wy.us/npm/index.html

The Citizen Corps program helps coordinate volunteer activities that will make our communities safer, stronger, and better prepared to respond to any emergency situation. It provides opportunities for people to participate in a range of measures to make their families, their homes, and their communities safer from the threats of crime, terrorism, and disasters of all kinds.
