An archaeology crew headed by Dr. Ken Cannon, USU Archaeological Services, from Logan, Utah, is surveying the new 82-acre historical park where the Lander Trail crosses the New Fork River in Sublette County.
The Sublette County Historical Society, which owns the property, hopes the archaeological survey will turn up more evidence of the thousands of emigrants that crossed through the area in the mid-1800s as part of the westward migration along the Oregon Trail.
The week-long archaeological survey was funded by a grant to the Sublette County Historical Society from the Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund.
The Historical Society plans to open the new park to the public sometime in 2012.
