Big Piney Chuckwagon Days - 2011
4th of July celebration in Big Piney & Marbleton
by Pinedale Online!
July 4, 2011
July 4th brought Chuckwagon Days Rodeo to Big Piney for the 77th year. But it didn’t happen without a lot of work by many volunteers. There were also some improvements to compliment long traditions.
For the first time, the free Bar-B-Que was held in the new Livestock Barn at the Sublette County Fairgrounds. With tables and hundreds of seats, there was plenty of room for everyone inside. The lines moved quickly, and the volunteers have really perfected the event.
Chuckwagon Days Rodeo was turned over to stock contractor A Diamond Rodeo, who also produce the summer rodeo series in Pinedale. This brought more local participation and new fun events.
The feature new event was Team Doctoring, a variation of team roping. Three member teams have to rope a steer, take it to the ground, transfer header rope to both front feet, ensure heeler rope is on both feet, and then get all three riders back on their horses. The team that does it fastest wins the event. Just to make it a bit more exciting, four teams compete with four steers in the arena at the same time. Twelve cowboys and four steers make for excitement.
The other new event was the Ranch Bronc Riding. Ranch horses and saddles are used and the rider uses both hands to hang on.
