Local artists to attend State Convention
by Charmian McLellan
April 7, 2011

Several artists from Sublette County will head for Dubois and the Wyoming Artists' Association's annual convention which will be held at the Headwaters Arts and Conference Center the weekend of May 6, 2011. Those planning to attend are: Les Burrough, Lois Decker, Debbie Despain, Devan LaMere, Laurie LaMere, Charmian McLellan, Kay Meeks, Holland Morelli, Debi Morley, Susan Nessan, Ruth Rawhouser, and Sharon Schell.

WAA president, Debbie Despain of Big Piney, has been busy all year organizing the weekend festivities which run the gamut from a Quick Draw and art auction, workshops, an art exhibit featuring artists from every corner of Wyoming, luncheon and business meeting, and banquet where the award for the 2011 Grand Wyoming Artist will be presented.

This year's prestigious workshop instructors are Fred Kingwill (watercolor) and Julie Jeppson (oil painting). The juror of the art exhibit, Tom Lucas, will present awards in a number of categories: Oil/Acrylic, Watercolor, Pastel, Miniature, Graphics, Pottery, Sculpture, Other Media, and Theme. He will also select a piece from the "Governor's Show" category to be sent to the governor's office in Cheyenne where it will be on display for a year, as well as twelve pieces from the "Congressional Show" category that will travel to the offices of Wyoming's senators and representative in Washington, D. C. These will be on loan to the congressional offices for a year.

New to the convention this year is "The Artists Anonymous" Sale. Artists have the opportunity to create a piece in the medium of their choosing on a 6 inch by 6 inch canvas or paper. The artwork is signed on the back only, offered for sale at the fixed price of $69.00. Half of the proceeds go to the artist and half go to WAA.

WAA has been a viable artists' organization for about 60 years. The conventions were suspended during World War II; then resumed. Each year, the president of the organization selects a theme for the convention. This year, the theme is "Wyoming: Why We Love It". All artists statewide are encouraged to join and attend. For more information about registration, times, dues, and workshop and show fees, please contact WAA president Debbie Despain at 307-276-3080, Charmian McLellan at 307-537-5488, or Kay Meeks at 307-859-8828.
