Seeing Red: Plight of the White Barks
May 17, 2010

PINEDALE – Please join David Gonzales, author and film maker, at 7 pm on Thursday, May 20th in the Community Room of the Sublette County Library, 155 S. Tyler Ave for an informative presentation on the plight of the Whitebark Pine in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Gonzales will present a film on the topic and also introduce, TreeFight, an initiative to involve the public in both the documentation of the devastation and in an experimental program to use pheromone treatments to protect certain high priority of Whitebarks.

"Whitebarks are being decimated by mountain pine beetles and an exotic fungus called white pine blister rust," said Gonzales. "The sweeping devastation to this high altitude species, whose seeds provide valuable nutrition to bears, birds and squirrels and whose outspread canopies provide shelter for wildlife and shade for the snow pack may be the most serious environmental calamity to befall the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem in its recorded history."

There will be a question and answer session immediately following the presentations. For more information please call 307-367-4114 or visit treefight.org
