Seven Big Piney High School students attended Wyoming State History Day on Monday, April 21st, at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. They again made history. They won seven awards and four students place. Those that placed will go on to attend National History Day at the University of Maryland from June 14 through June 20, 2009. The Big Piney students are students of history teacher Jonita Sommers.

Senior Division
Individual Documentary
1st place – Baylee Colton: "Actions and Legacies – The Man Behind the Decision"

Group Performance
1st place – Mary Jane Schmidt and Shelby Brown: "Voice for the Mad: Dorothea Dix’s Actions and Legacies"

Individual Performance
1st place – Jenny Beiermann: "The Heart of the Matter: Dr. Michael DeBakey’s Medical Legacy"

Special Awards

Berenice Ruiz -- American Heritage Center Primary Sources Award
Jenny Beiermann -- College of Health Sciences Award
Mary Jane Schmidt and Shelby Brown -- Jurisprudence Award
Mary Jane Schmidt and Shelby Brown -- Gerald & Jessie F. Chambers Wyoming History Day Award which was the best overall Senior Division entry.

Andrea Noble, from Pinedale High School, won 1st in Senior Division Historical Papers and will be going to Nationals.
