October 25, 2008

The non-profit organization ‘A Woman’s Work’ held their "Fall Follies" social and fundraiser on Friday evening at the Marbleton Senior Center. The group began last January, 2008, with the desire to help women in need. They started with the challenge to get 100 women to donate $100 each in 100 days. They achieved their goal in under 100 days. They use the money to help women with dire needs that aren’t met by other resources in the community. All they ask in return is that the woman they help performs an act of kindness within 60 days. To date, they have filled nine requests for help.

Community members filled the Marbleton Senior Center to support the event, with a line extending out the door waiting to get in. The audience was thrilled by the surprise appearances of many celebrities who came to Big Piney to perform for the fundraiser. Locals Bill Budd, Rod Bennett, and Tracy Hughes gave humorous commentary after each performance.

"As an organization, we pride ourselves on our quick response to emergency situations," according to their most recent newsletter. Everything is kept confidential. Only the executive director knows the woman’s name. No cash is ever given out to the woman. AWW pays the provider directly. Earlier in October, AWW received a $16,000 grant from The Upper Green River Sustainable Community Endowment Fund of the Wyoming Community Foundation to fund women in LaBarge, Marbleton and Big Piney with unexpected and dire needs.
