The Green River Valley Land Trust (GRVLT) and Sublette County Historic Preservation Board hosted a tour of the Lander Trail near Big Piney on Friday. A group of around 40 people took the tour which followed the trail from the Sublette County Fairgrounds through South Piney Canyon.

The trail crosses the Cross Lazy Two ranch, a GRVLT conservation project property. During the tour, Tim and Bob Thompson showed where the trail crosses the family ranch. Years ago, Tim found an old cannon ball and a gun barrel on the property. Pinedale Historian Ann Noble led the tour and shared information about the history of the trail, which was a cut-off of the Oregon Trail used from 1859 into the 1900s. The route provided wood, forage and water for travelers and cut off nearly seven days of travel time for settlers headed to Oregon and California.

    Road remnant
Faint remnants of a road go through the fields on the Cross Lazy Two ranch. It is uncertain whether this remnant is part of the Lander Trail traffic or a later settlement-era homestead road.
