(Rock Springs) - New recreation, education, and fire facilities will soon be built in Rock Springs thanks to the Recreation and Public Purposes Act (R&PP). The Act authorizes the sale or lease of public lands for recreational or public purposes to state and local governments and to qualified nonprofit organizations.
The lease was approved for the Rock Springs Young at Heart Recreational Facility in 2007. The new facility will be located at the corner of Reagan Avenue and Sweetwater Drive near the Rock Springs Family Recreation Center.
Sweetwater County School District #1 will be building a new school complex because of the R&PP lease issued Jan. 18, 2008. The complex will consist of several school buildings, playgrounds, athletic fields and parking lots.
Construction is expected to begin on an elementary school (kindergarten-fourth grade) by summer 2008. The complex will be located at the corner of Reagan Avenue and Summit Drive near the Rock Springs Family Recreation Center.
Sweetwater County Fire District #1 has submitted an application for a new fire training center and other infrastructure. The proposed location for the new facility is on the corner of Yellowstone Road and Desert Lane. BLM will begin the public scoping process during the spring of 2008.
Through the R&PP Act, BLM continues to make public lands available to local communities for recreation opportunities and critical public necessities.
