I-80 Rock Springs road construction update
Expect minor delays
by Wyoming Department of Transportation
June 14, 2007
(Rock Springs) - Traffic is expected to be moving smoothly throughout the Rock Springs Marginal, Dewar Drive/Pilot Butte reconstruction project, according to the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT).
Pilot Butte: Retaining walls are being constructed under the bridge, with traffic under the control of flaggers and reduced speeds. Short term delays should be anticipated.
Swanson Drive: Construction of the retaining walls will begin the latter part of the week of June 18. Work activity will be limited to one side of the bridge structure, so no flaggers or delays are anticipated.
County Road Separation Bridge and Community Park Work: Drive under the interstate remains closed to traffic.
Dewar Drive: There will be intermittent closures of one lane of Dewar Drive to accommodate the construction equipment while working under the bridge structure area. On occasion, the closures will remain in place overnight. The traveling public needs to be aware of the potential for closures, be observant and obey signage and flaggers.
Eastbound & Westbound lanes of I-80: Work continues in the eastbound lanes, with head to head traffic in the westbound lanes. Motorists should be watchful for trucks exiting eastbound I-80 onto the new grade roadway, as they are exiting at slower speeds than the traveling public. Yield signs have been placed at the end of the on ramps on both the east and westbound lanes and must be obeyed. This means ramp traffic must yield to interstate traffic.
45 MPH Speed Limit in Primary Work Areas: It is the Wyoming Department of Transportation's goal to minimize traffic delays and congestion, but the safety of the traveling public remains the priority. The speed limit on I-80 is posted at 65 M.P.H., with 45 M.P.H. in the primary work areas. WYDOT and the prime contractor, Upper Plains Contracting, Inc. are committed to public and contractor safety and urges motorists to slow down, be alert and cautious while driving through construction areas, as well as being prepared for delays and give themselves extra time to reach their destinations.
