The long, lacy ice crystals of hoar frost form on objects when the air is moist and the surface is cold. Humidity and moisture combine to freeze instantly. The water vapour condenses through deposition directly as solid ice onto the surface of objects. Hoar frost appears to "grow" out from the surface as delicate, lacy fronds. It can be on wood and metal, plants, and even on the fur and hair of animals.

On Wednesday morning, the Upper Green River Valley was blanketed with moist fog. The combination of humid air and cold created a winter wonderland scene as hoar frost covered the surfaces of fences, buildings and even on livestock. Photographers Pam McCulloch and Dawn Ballou, Pinedale Online, took pictures of the unique formations in Pinedale and on a ranch near Big Piney.
