EnCana Oil & Gas USA's recent $2 million gift to the University of Wyoming for new petroleum engineering research laboratories will be matched by the state for a total of $4 million going to the program.
The gift, to be made in annual payments of $400,000 during the next five years, will result in annual receipts of $800,000 toward establishment of an EnCana Research Lab, an EnCana Reservoir Simulation Lab, and provide additional laboratories and facilities.
"We are delighted that EnCana's support for the re-establishment of an undergraduate petroleum engineering program at the University of Wyoming will be matched by the state of Wyoming," says Jeff Wojahn, president of EnCana USA. "Our goal has been to support programs that serve the needs of students, the university, and the oil and gas industry for many years to come. It is gratifying to see the state of Wyoming doubling the impact that our gift can have on Wyoming's energy future."
The UW Board of Trustees reinstated the bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering in fall 2005 after an eight-year absence; the first class of students in the program will begin studies this fall, with students transferring to the program graduating as early as 2008.
"As we prepare to launch the School of Energy Resources, which the governor and legislature authorized earlier this spring, it makes a world of sense to couple available state resources with industry resources to enhance our energy research capabilities," says UW President Tom Buchanan. "The EnCana gift meets both the letter and the spirit of the state matching program legislation. We thank EnCana for this gift, acknowledge the wisdom of the state's investment in matching funds, and look forward to even greater industry contributions to the School of Energy Research."
