Fremont and Half Moon Lakes
April 12, 2006
Fremont Lake is still frozen over as of this picture taken on Wednesday, April 12th, but the warm temperatures will soon cause the ice to begin break up. Each winter, the Pinedale Boat Club puts a barrel out on the ice in the middle of the lake. The club sponsors a barrel drop guessing contest to see when the ice melts and the barrel lands on shore. The prize is $500. Last year it touched on April 29th at 6:06 pm. To see the dates from 1979 to present, see the Boat Club web page: www.pinedaleonline.com/boatclub.
Half Moon Lake, just 9 miles from Pinedale, is also still is frozen over. This picture was taken on Wednesday, April 12. This is one of the views from Skyline Drive up to White Pine ski area. The road is bare and dry the 10 miles up to the resort. The snow is melting fast along most of the lower valley. The ski area is high enough in the mountains to still have 70" of base and plenty of snow for those who want to get in some end of season downhill skiing and snowboarding. They expect to close Easter weekend, celebrating with sunrise Easter services and their fun Easter Egg hunt on Sunday, April 16th. www.whitepineski.com
