by Bureau of Land Management
February 6, 2006

Regional middle school students will be in the zone as they "calculate" their next move on February 10 during the regional level of the national MATHCOUNTS competition. This year’s contest begins at 9:00 am and will be held in Room 1003 at the Western Wyoming Community College campus in Rock Springs.

The middle school "mathletes" are participating in the annual MATHCOUNTS competition sponsored by the Southwest Wyoming Chapter of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE). “Eleven schools and 80 students will compete,” said Steven Boyer, coordinator for the annual NSPE event. Boyer is also the civil engineer for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) office in Rock Springs.

Schools represented are:
• East Junior High School in Rock Springs
• Rawlins Middle School
• Davis Middle School in Evanston
• Evanston Middle School
• Farson Eden Middle School
• Lincoln Middle School in Green River
• Mountain View Middle School
• Pinedale Middle School
• Kemmerer Middle School
• Heritage Christian Academy in Big Piney
• Big Piney Middle School

"Teachers and students have been preparing for the competition since the fall. Students will compete individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches. Subjects include algebra, probability, statistics and geometry," Boyer added. Winners will receive prizes, and advance to the state MATHCOUNTS finals, slated for April in Laramie.

MATHCOUNTS is a national program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students. The program focuses on middle school students, who are at a crucial stage in developing and sustaining math interest and ability.

Parents, friends and the community can get involved with MATHCOUNTS through various opportunities. Learn more about the MATHCOUNTS program by visiting their website at: http://www.mathcounts.org.

The award ceremony begins at 2:30 pm on Friday, February 10, in Room 1005, near the WWCC Cafeteria.
