Freudenthal writes again to support wildlife stipulations
Letter to the Energy & Natural Resources Committee
November 8, 2005

Wyoming Governor Dave Freudenthal again wrote a letter voicing his concerns about removing seasonal wildlife stipulations as legislators struggle with the challenge of meting the nation’s winter heating supply. Tuesday, the Governor wrote a letter to senators on the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee which is considering a proposal to do away with seasonal wildlife stipulations. The letter was sent to Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., and Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., respectively chairman and ranking member of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

Governor Freudenthal said that seasonal wildlife stipulations are not a hindrance in developing the nation’s energy supply, and may, in fact, serve to enhance development opportunities by preventing even greater regulatory burdens later on due to efforts to list sensitive wildlife species as threatened or endangered.

The Governor said he will continue to offer his support for the appropriate waiver of seasonal stipulations in well-mitigated development plans, but he cannot do so wholesale.

"I write you with serious concerns regarding a proposal to abandon these stipulations on federally managed lands in Wyoming to accelerate oil and gas exploration and production. I would ask for extreme caution as this discussion goes forward," Freudenthal said.
