Wyoming Quarter design ideas wanted
February 3, 2005
Attention Wyoming residents: The state is looking for design suggestions for the new Wyoming state quarter, due for release in 2007.
Wyoming residents can choose any one of several ways to submit their design ideas. Submission forms will soon begin appearing in Wyoming Press Association newspapers across the state. Interested citizens can also download and print a form from the Wyoming Arts Council Web site at: http://wyoarts.state.wy.us/, where there will soon be a version to fill out online as well. Ideas can also be submitted in narrative form to the committee at 2320 Capitol Avenue, Cheyenne, WY 82002.
"Between the anticipation surrounding the release of Wyoming’s quarter and the several ways for submitting suggestions, I’m looking forward to as broad an array of ideas as possible," Gov. Dave Freudenthal said. "We have a chance to design something that will be representing Wyoming to people across the country for generations to come."
The U.S. Mint has issued general guidelines for the design of the quarter. Priority consideration will be given to designs that are enduring representations of the state. Inappropriate design concepts include, but are not limited to, logos or depictions of specific commercial, private, educational, civic, religious, sports or other organizations whose membership or ownership is not universal.
The state will provide to the U.S. Mint at least three, but no more than five, different concepts or themes emblematic of Wyoming; each concept or theme will be in narrative format. Based on the narratives, the Mint will produce original artwork of the concepts, focusing on aesthetic beauty, historical accuracy, appropriateness and "coinability."
Once the state has submitted its three ideas, the state and the Mint will collaborate on the artwork. The state’s committee will participate in this collaboration to ensure historical accuracy and proper state representation in the artwork. The Mint will refine the artwork before forwarding it to the advisory bodies.
The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee and the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts will review the candidate designs and make recommendations, and the U.S. Mint may make changes to address any of their recommendations. The Mint will then present the candidate designs to the Secretary of the Treasury. From among the designs approved by the secretary, the state will choose the final design and submit it for federal approval.
A new state quarter comes out approximately every 10 weeks, in the order the states were admitted to the Union. Wyoming’s quarter, the 44th to be released, is due out in 2007. Wyoming was admitted to the Union July 10, 1890.
