The Sublette County Ski and Snowboard Club hosted the 1st Annual Sunny Korfanta Giant Slalom Ski Race at White Pine Ski Area on Saturday, February 26. The Ski Club event was open to non-members as well members. The racers skied under beautiful blue skies and warm temperatures. The slalom took place on the Fremont Run at the ski area.
The race was named after local legend Albert "Sunny" Korfanta who was one of the original founders of the ski area some 30 years ago. White Pine staff brought Mr. Korfanta to the finish line in style and comfort in an enclosed ski run groomer to watch the race. Stuart Thompson, one of the current owners and manager of White Pine, told of the early days when Sunny Korfanta would ski to the hill from Pinedale. When asked what he thought of the ski area now, Mr. Korfanta said, "It is wonderful! We thought it was wonderful back when we had it. Now it is even more wonderful!"
The photos on this page show some of the highlights of the Giant Slalom event. Our photographers tried to get pictures of as many of the kids racing as we could. Parents & family: Many more photos of the kids racing can be found on the Racer Photo Gallery page. (52 Additional photos)
