One-Lunger Snowmobile Race
January 1, 2005
The Pinedale Snow Explorers Snowmobile Club started the new year by holding their 5th annual Pinedale One Lunger 100 Snowmobile Race on New Year’s Day. The event first debuted in December, 2000. The interest in vintage snowmobiles spawned the existence of the event and turned it into a fun annual activity for the Pinedale snowmobile club, attracting many participants.
The race was held at the Sagebrush Downs oval track near Cora, about eight miles west of Pinedale, in view of the scenic Wind River mountain range. Participants and spectators enjoyed sunny blue skies for this year’s event.
The rules require that all entries must be 1973 vintage or older single cylinder snowmobiles. Any engine modification is allowed and any fuel may be used. Jackshafts are prohibited. Entries are composed of two-person teams who take turns riding the machine on the challenging course. The object and hope is that the snowmachine will be able to make it through all the laps, although many break down during the race, which is part of the challenge and fun. Pit crews stand by for mechanical repairs and fuel. Previous winners carried an orange flag on their snowmachines to set them apart from the rest of the pack. The course is approximately ½ mile of twists, turns and bumps. The back straight provides a less intense ride and is used for a much-needed rest. This year there was about 18 inches of snow on the ground for the race.
Club members were on hand with fresh-cooked hamburgers and cheeseburgers for spectators and participants. A track-side warming bonfire helped warm those who got too cold, although with no wind, some of the locals seemed quite comfortable and watched the race without even wearing coats in the 25 degree temperature. As always, paramedics were on hand with an ambulance in case their services were needed.
The Pinedale Snow Explorers Snowmobile Club holds a variety of fun events throughout the winter months. Their next event is a Poker Run ride to Green River Lakes on Sunday, January 16th.
