Yellowstone Snowmobiling for 2004/2005
November 6, 2004
Yellowstone National Park will close roads for the season at 9 pm on Sunday, November 7, 2004, to allow snow to accumulate in preparation for the winter season. Roads are scheduled to reopen (dependent on sufficient snow) for the winter season to oversnow vehicles at 7 am on Wednesday, December 15, 2004. A recent decision, in effect for the next three winter seasons, will allow for snowmobile and snowcoach use through the winter of 2006-2007.
Under the decision, the following changes will be in effect beginning this winter season: • Only 720 snowmobiles will be allowed in the park each day. • All recreational snowmobiles will be required to best available technology. • All recreational snowmobilers in Yellowstone must travel with a commercial guide. • All snowmobile operators are required to have a valid state driver’s license. No learner permits are allowed.
Groomed roads will begin to close to oversnow vehicle use at 9 pm on Monday, March 6, 2005, with the closure of the Mammoth-to-Norris road. On Wednesday, March 8, Norris Junction to Madison Junction, and Norris Junction to Canyon will close. All remaining groomed roads will close to oversnow vehicle use at 9 pm on Monday, March 13, 2005.
