Friday,
January 26, 2001 Update - IPSSSDR
On
Monday, January 29th, the International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog
Race (IPSSSDR) arrives in Sublette County for the Pinedale Stage Stop
of the annual race. The race started in Jackson on January 27th and will
end in Jackson on February 7th, with 12 stage stops during the course of
the race. Each day, teams
race between 30 to 80 miles of the course with the best accumulated times
determining the overall winner. The musher wearing the Leader's yellow
racing bib is the musher who has accumulated the fastest times at each
state. The stage stop format is dog-friendly, allowing mushers and dogs
to rest overnight, and providing stage stop communities opportunities to
show off their towns hosting festivals, banquets and carnivals surrounding
the race. Stage stops are Jackson, Moran, Dubois, Pinedale, Atlantic City,
Lander, Bridger Valley, Evanston, Kemmerer/Diamondville, Star Valley, Box
Y and Alpine.
Teams
will arrive for the Pinedale Stage Stop at Elk Ridge Lodge in the upper
Green River Valley from Dubois on Monday, January 29th. The next morning,
January 30, the race starts at Elk Ridge Lodge and goes to the finish line
on the west end of Pinedale. The race course follows the Cora Road for
miles and then Highway 191 to Pinedale, making this route one of the most viewer-friendly
of the race. Teams are expected in on Tuesday between 11 am and 3 pm, and
lunch will be available at the finish line on the west end of Pinedale.
A musher reception will be held Tuesday evening from 5-7 pm at the Pinedale
Community Church, hosted by the Pinedale Area Chamber of Commerce. On Wednesday,
January 31, the race resumes at the Irish Canyon Starting Line, east of
Boulder 23 miles. For more information about the race, see the IPSSSDR
page.

Tough
Winter for Big Game due to Poor Forage/Browse Conditions
Wyoming
Game & Fish Press Release - Cheyenne
While
winter has moderated in January, the stage is set to possibly be inflicted
with significant losses of mule deer and antelope across much of the Cowboy
State this spring. "We've been set up for this with last summer's drought.
Wild animals entered the winter in very poor shape, and we had one of the
coldest Novembers on record," says Jay Lawson, the Wyoming Game and Fish
Department's chief game warden. "Conditions right now are highly variable
around the state, but spring storms could be absolutely devastating to
wildlife." On top of that, wildlife habitat conditions are horrible across
much of Wyoming. Even if good numbers of mule deer and antelope survive
the winter, there may not be much to eat well into the spring when things
begin to turn green. "We've had a series of mild winters, and a long stretch
of drought, so a lot of the habitat isn't in very good shape anyway," says
Harry Harju, G&F's assistant wildlife division chief. "Even with normal
moisture this spring, it could take years for shrubs to recover across
much of Wyoming."
Average to above-average antelope and deer mortality is expected in the
Jackson-Pinedale region, according to regional wildlife supervisor Bernie
Holz. "We've had a lot of drought at lower elevations, but things were
better up high," Holz says. "From data we collected, we had no shrub growth
throughout the region last summer." Holz says most deer and antelope entered
the winter in good body condition, but last summer's drought has left crucial
winter ranges in poor condition. "We had cold weather in late November
and December, but the temperatures have moderated since then. We have some
bare ground on winter range, even near Big Piney, and we haven't got a
lot of snow on most of our winter ranges," Holz adds.
Wildlife workers started finding dead deer in urban areas as early as November.
"We usually don't see this until January or February," Schmidlin says.
Elk in the Red Desert, Green Mountain and Beaver Rim country are also displaying
drought impacts. Many elk checked by game wardens and wildlife biologists
last fall were vexed with very low fat reserves.
The November/December period was the fourth coldest in Cheyenne since 1895,
reports meteorologist Don Day of Cheyenne. Day, whose Day Weather, Inc.
provides weather forecasts to radio stations, newspapers and businesses,
says Wyoming still has the potential for one more severe cold spell. "It's
been as cold as 95 below in Siberia, and that cold air is still in the
hemisphere and should influence us in time," Day says. He predicts colder
than normal temperatures with near normal precipitation for the remainder
of the winter. At this juncture, he also foresees a wet spring. "February
and March could be really interesting," he says of the weather prospects.
That could also be very interesting for G&F biologists as they try
to assess winter big game mortality while developing recommendations for
2001 hunting seasons.

Update
on Wild Horses Killed
Reward
upped to $30,000
The
reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person
or persons responsible for the wild horse slayings in the Red Desert area
and near Rawlins has been upped from $25,000 to $30,000
with the additional $5,000 added by the Rock Springs Grazing Association.
To date 37 wild horses have been found dead in the Rock Springs and Rawlins
areas. Three additional horses were found last weekend north of Rock Springs.
Wild horse herds freely roam on the Bureau of Land Management lands in
the 100 miles of open sagebrush country between Pinedale and Rock Springs
and are considered by some to be symbolic of the free spirit and unhurried
lifestyle of Wyoming. These shootings come as a shock to many of us who
live here who cannot imagine why anyone would kill these magnificent animals.
One reader wrote via e-mail, "The wild horses are more then just a symbol
of our western heritage, they are a beautiful, free-spirited wonderment
that provokes the imagery of freedom within ourselves." Anyone who
has information is asked to call the Rock Springs BLM Office at (307)352-0214
or the Rawlins Office at (307)328-4211. For more information, please visit
the BLM Wild Horse and Burro BLM web site at: www.wildhorseandburro.blm.gov

Mountain
Lion Update
Dennis
Almquist of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department reported that there hasn't
been any activity in the past week from a mountain lion believed to be
frequenting the Pine Creek drainage north of Pinedale and around Fremont
Lake. Last week two dog maulings in the Green River area south of Cora
are believed to be from a mountain lion. Fortunately both dogs survived
the attacks. Local residents have reported seeing mountain lion tracks
this past week north of Pinedale in the area around the Gun Club shooting
range and along Pine Creek, but it is uncertain if this is the same lion
reported approximately 3-8 miles south of the Cora Y along the Green River.
So far, there haven't been any reports in town or along Pine Creek of animal
injuries due to mountain lion attacks, but the local Game & Fish office
is keeping a close eye on the activity and will consider taking action
if the lion starts to cause problems.

$10 hands available with an 80% payback. The run starts at Elk Ridge Lodge
at 9 am and will make stops at Tosi, the Cookout, Moose/Gypsum and end
at The Place around 3 pm. Hamburgers will be available at the lunch stop
for $2.00. This event is open to the public and they encourage everyone
to come on out and join in the fun! For more information contact Gary Neely

Soda
Lake
Soda
Lake, located not too far north of Pinedale, is always popular with the
avid fishermen who eagerly await opening
day May 10th. Fishermen should be aware that during the month of May the
lake is closed to internal combustion motors through May 31st. Electric
motors, canoes, row boats, etc are allowed. After May 31st, internal combustion
motors are permitted. Personal watercraft are prohibited on this lake (ie.
jet-skis) throughout the season. Due to the high alkalinity of this lake,
and the fact that it does not have an inlet or an outlet, natural fish
reproduction is largely unsuccessful at Soda Lake. Every year, the Wyoming
Game & Fish Department spawns and stocks several thousand brown and
brook trout from the 312-acre lake. Brook and brown trout eggs from Soda
Lake are highly sought after by other states because the population is
one of the fre disease-free stocks in the country. For more information
about Soda Lake, please see our new Soda Lake
page.

Wild
Horses Killed
The
Bureau of Land Management, in association with several
humane organizations, has issued a $25,000 reward for information leading
to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for shooting more than
30 wild horses in the Red Desert area about 70 miles south of Pinedale
and near Rawlins during the past month. The Rock Springs Field Office reported
that they found four dead horses north of Rock Springs on December 15th,
2000. On January 2nd, ten more wild horses were reported dead on BLM public
lands in the same area about 30 miles northeast of Rock Springs. One wild
horse was also reported shot northwest of Baggs, Wyoming. By January 9th
the count was up to 30 dead horses in the Rock Springs area and four in
Rawlins. When BLM officials arrived at the scene in early January, they
found one badly wounded horse still alive that was destroyed by investigators.
The BLM is currently investigating the incidents and requests that anyone
with information about the shootings contact them. A BLM press release reported,
"In 1971, Congress declared wild horses to be living symbols of our historic
and pioneer spirit of the West; they contribute to the diversity of life
forms on our public lands. Wild horses are protected under the Wild-Free
Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971. There are over 7,000 wild horses in
Wyoming. Killing wild horses is a federal crime and violators may be fined
up to $2,000 or imprisionment for not more than one year or both for each
violation." Anyone with information about the shootings is encouraged
to call the BLM law enforcement officer in either Rock Springs (307-352-0214)
or Rawlins (307-328-0211). For more information, please visit the BLM Wild

Mesa seasonal vehicle closure in effect
The
Pinedale Field Office has announced that all BLM-adminstered public lands
on the Mesa south of Pinedale are closed to all off-highway vehicle (OHV)
travel, i.e. snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, pickups, sport utility
vehicles, etc. The closure is in effect from January 15 thru April 30,
2001. The Green River Road, the Paradise Road, and all other county-plowed
roads on the Mesa, however, will remain open for travel.
BLM
Pinedale Field Manager Prill Mecham stated, "The closure is necessary to
protect wintering mule deer and prevent soil erosion. Although snow depths
are less than average and temperatures have been relatively mild, increased
disturbance caused by motor vehicles could still add to the physiological
stress on wintering deer. In addition, weather conditions could easily
change for the worse."
Personnel
of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Sublette County Sheriff's Office,
and BLM law enforcement staff are exempt from the closure. Operators of
existing natural gas facilities may perform maintenance and pumping as
required. Travel to a state land section for the purpose of access to natural
gas wells is authorized across BLM public land on upgraded roads only.
Livestock operators needing to do spring maintenance on range improvements
are exempt after April 15, 2001.
Violations
of the closure will be referred to the appropriate agency. For more information
or for maps of the area, contact the BLM Pinedale Field Office at 432 East
Mill Street, Pinedale, WY 82941 or call (307) 367-5300.

Ranchers,
land managers and anyone else interested in developing grazing management
systems to optimize wildlife habitat, livestock gains and land productivity
are invited to attend one of nine free workshops on the subject to be held
across Wyoming this winter. "The workshops will help landowners and land
managers identify resource improvement opportunities and technical and
financial assistance available from federal, state and local conservation
agencies to help meet their operation's wildlife goals," said Bill Gerhart,
G&F assistant habitat supervisor. "Grazing Management to Meet Wildlife
Needs" workshops are being sponsored by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department
and the local resource conservation districts. The workshops will be led
by Roy Roath, range extension specialist at Colorado State University,
who is assisting the G&F on range and wildlife habitat programs across
the state. Local G&F, resource district personnel and others will also
be on hand to help address local concerns. The workshop will be held in

skiers and snowboarders enjoying the slopes.
Happy
New Year!!!
The
year 2000 has slipped by. Where it went so fast, we don't know. This year
has already brought a great winter. White Pine Ski Area and Resort is up
and running, open 7 days a week now until Easter. The work on their lodge
has progressed and now food services and restroom facilities are open inside.
The skiing and snowboarding has been great! For those who don't downhill
ski, there are miles of x-country trails (free) that can be accessed right
from the lodge parking area. For those who don't ski at all, it's fun to
just sit in the lodge sipping a cup of hot chocolate and watch the skiers
and snowboarders from the windows in the warm lodge. The view is great!
Folks
who went out ice skating on Fremont Lake last weekend said the ice was
crystal clear, about 4"+ thick. Many enjoyed the New Year ice skating,
playing hockey and snowmachining across the lake's frozen surface. Looking
through the clear ice, the fish could be seen swimming below the ice surface.
It's a rarity for the ice to freeze clear, and only happens once every
decade or so.

Pinedale, Wyoming. Nestled on the western flank of the beautiful Wind River
Mountains, our little town enjoys a low-key, rural lifestyle many people
don't get to live anymore. Many of us living here now used to live 'out
there' with the stress-filled 9-5 jobs, then go home and watch the news
to hear about the latest gang shootings and drug busts. Been there and
done that. Every now and again when our local papers print the Sheriff's
Report we are reminded of our lives 'before' and how fortunate we are that
these are the kinds of problems our local law enforcement has to deal with:
December
18: Officers were dispatched to a residence in Marbleton on a complaint
that a fox was in the trailer court harassing a cat. Upon arrival, officers
met with the complainant and she said a fox had been hanging around the
trailer court harassing her dogs and cats. The complainant said that the
fox would have a stand-off with her dogs and would sit and bark back and
forth with the dogs. The complainant also said that the fox had been around
for several nights and, because of the way the fox had been acting, she
was concerned that it may be rabid and might injure one of her pets. Officers
had dispatch contact the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and they stated
that if officers felt the fox was rabid, they should destroy the fox and
have it sent in to be tested. Officers informed the complainant that if
the fox came back to give them a call and they would have it destroyed.
Before clearing the trailer court, officers observed a fox at the east
end heading out into the sagebrush away from the trailer court. Officers
have not seen the fox or heard from the complainant.
December
19: Officers received a report of 3 loose llamas on Soda Lake Road.
Officers penned the llamas in a pasture and asked dispatch to get in touch
with the possible owner.
December
19: Officers received a call in reference to some Christmas lights
left on at the preschool. Officers checked and found lights on a Christmas
tree were left on. The tree was natural, so to avoid a fire hazard, officers
advised dispatch to contact someone from the preschool to turn them off,
which they did.
December
23: Officers responded to a gas drive off. The driver was contacted
and said he thought the price of gas was included in the payment with the
groceries. Payment was made and all was well.
December
23: Officers responded to a report of 7 horses running loose on Granite
Lane. Officers found the horses, and when the owner showed up, they helped
him put the animals back where they belonged.
