The Horse Fire burning in the Wyoming Range is about two miles west of the historic Prospect Peak lookout on the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Firefighters have wrapped the structure with a special aluminized structure wrap designed to deflect radiant heat and embers.

As of Thursday, June 19th, the fire had grown to 1,456 acres and was 6% contained. A road and trail closure is in effect in the area of the fire for safety reasons. The fire started on Friday, June 13th, due to lightning.

The lookout was built in the summer of 1941 by L. W. Roberts and Dick Roberts for the Forest Service as part of a network of lookout towers for wildfire detection. It was decommissioned several decades later as more modern technology, such as airplanes, were used to detect forest fires.

The historic lookout is eligible to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
