Fremont Lake freezes clear again
January 19, 2022
Fremont Lake has frozen clear again this year. Lots of people have been enjoying heading up during the lull between snow storms to go ice skating and playing hockey on the giant sheet of clear glass-like ice. Mix that with the beautiful orange sunrises and sunsets, and a full moon in the night sky, and it is truly a magical experience. Not the entire lake is frozen, so adventurers need to be cautious where they go. We’re told there is a good four inches of ice on the lower end of the lake. Some folks have taken snowmobiles out and caution that the upper end is still marginal. We’ve heard of at least one person falling in, but fortunately was able to get himself out ok. The Big Fish Winter Derby on Fremont Lake is scheduled for the weekend of March 5th and 6th, and the lake should be well frozen by then.
Thank you to Dave Bell for his pictures from January 10th and 11th, Hank Ruland for sharing his drone pictures from Monday, January 17th, and Sharon Boender Rauenzahn for her stunning picture of the ice skater during the sunrise the morning of Wednesday, January 19th.
