Funnel cloud? In January in Wyoming? January 25, 2018
Renee' Smythe sent in pictures of what appears to be a funnel cloud seen south of Boulder the morning of Wednesday, January 24th. We thought it would be very unusual to see a funnel cloud in Wyoming in the winter, so we passed the picture over to the folks at the National Weather Service in Riverton. Here is the reply we got back from Meteorologist in Charge Chris Jones, "That is a condensation trail (contrail) from an aircraft emerging from a deck of thick cirrus clouds at a high altitude. No funnel cloud in this case." The formation appears to be coming straight down, but that is an optical illusion. It is actual vertical, coming out of the back of an airplane.
An optical illusion makes this look like a funnel cloud. It is actually a con trail from an airplane. Photo taken January 24, 2018 near Sand Draw, south of Boulder, Wyoming. Photo by Renee' Smythe.
