SCSD#1 response to Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting
by Jay Harnack, Superintendent, Sublette County School District #1
December 16, 2012
In light of the school shooting that took place in Connecticut, Sublette County School District #1 would like our parents and community members to rest assured that the district continues its ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our students and staff.
Please be aware that the district has a crisis management plan and emergency response procedures designed to mitigate and prevent such incidents. Over the past two years we have added additional external safety measures and surveillance equipment. We have opened our facilities and buses to the Sheriff’s office for training. We have added a school resource officer and completely revised our crisis management plan and our emergency response manuals to match the incident command system used by first responders. And most importantly, we continue to schedule and conduct training drills with the Sheriff’s office to address the threat of an active shooter. At its earliest possible opportunity, each school will also review our lockdown procedures to ensure all duties and responsibilities are well understood and actively assigned.
In today’s media saturated environment, we know that our students will come to school with questions and concerns about the events that took place. Our school counselors will be available to students, staff and parents. We will also utilize the expertise of our counselorsto provide guidance to our classroom teachers regarding age appropriate discussion, and to provide students with an opportunity to talk to a trusted adult should the need arise. Additionally, we want our students to know that we do everything in our power to make SCSD #1 schools safe and secure.
Sublette County School District #1, its Board of Trustees, and our faculty, staff, and students, offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the students and staff of Sandy Hook Elementary School who lost their lives.
