Drift Map
The Green River Drift is 67.8 miles long, with 31.5 miles of spur trails. Each spring, ranchers from south of Hwy 351, east of Big Piney, bring their cattle north and are joined by other ranchers along the way to trail their cattle north into the Upper Green River Valley. In the fall, the process is reversed and the cattle come down from summer pasture out of the mountains to return to their home ranches. The Drift has been taking place each year since 1896.

Green River Drift

Mary Hopkins, Historic Preservation Officer with the Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), came to Pinedale on Thursday, along with Laura Nowlin and Kara Hahn, to discuss the nomination of the Green River Drift to the National Register of Historic Places as a Traditional Cultural Property.
The Green River cattle drift has been used since 1896 and is still in use today as part of the cattle operations for ranchers in the Upper Green River Valley. It is 67.8 miles long and has 31.5 miles of spur trails. Local rancher, Jonita Sommers, has been instrumental in trying to get the nomination for the Drift.
SHPO is seeking input from the local community about this nomination. This is a process that has been in the works for two years. Now SHPO plans to return to do oral interviews with people who have participated in the Drift, and ask anyone who is interested in being interviewed to get in contact with them. http://wyoshpo.state.wy.us
