Green River Classic Sled Dog Race loses corporate sponsor

Due to the economy, BP’s Jonah Operations has decided not to sponsor the 2009-2010 Green River Classic Sled Dog Races. "This request was reviewed by our BP contribution committee and because of the current economic challenges we have decided not to sponsor the Green River Classic event for 2010. BP is doing its best this year to appropriate our available funds to programs that best support the communities where we do business." Tara Campbell, BP Jonah Operations via email.
BP provided the $8600 purse and multiple other items, including a heated tent at the starting line that made the GRC a one-of-a-kind event. BP’s support will be greatly missed.
The board of directors for the Wyoming Sled Dog Events, the group that governs the Green River Classic, is hoping to find another sponsor or combination of sponsors to cover the prizes for this year’s races. "We are starting a major fundraising campaign so that we can continue to have this special event in the Pinedale area," states Gwynn McCool the race organizer. "While we want to get the support for this event from business that are local to Sublette County, we may also have to contact larger companies in order to reach our goal of $12,000.00 for the prize purse, trophies and operating costs."
Allan Berge, a GRC committee member and mushers says, "It is such a good family event, not only for the musher families, but also for the local folks of Pinedale to come out and enjoy the scenery and dogs. This race from the beginning has been so popular to the local businesses of Pinedale due to the amount of business the mushers and their families bring into Pinedale in that weekend’s time."
Any business or person wanting to become involved with the Green River Classic Dog Sled races can contact the Green River Classic Committee at greenriverclassic@live.com or PO Box 851, Wilson, WY 83014. This year’s event is tentatively scheduled for January 2nd and 3rd, 2010.
