Tornado spotted near Green River

A series of strong thunderstorms resulted in a tornado about 18 miles northwest of Green River a little before 5PM on Sunday, August 10. The National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning at 4:48PM for west-central Sweetwater County until 5:15PM. A member of the public called in the tornado sighting. The twister was moving southeast at 30 miles per hour.
The tornado moved near Interstate 80 exits 83 and 85 between mile markers 74 and 88.
The National Weather Service advises anyone near a tornado to move into a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, and to abandon mobile homes and vehicles.
Tornadoes are relatively uncommon in western Wyoming. Summer typically brings a build-up of clouds and thunderstorms in the afternoon, bringing lightning and brief down-burst winds. There have been occasional sightings of funnel clouds and tornadoes in Sublette County. The National Weather Service asks the public in the western Wyoming area to report severe weather to their Riverton office at 1-800-211-1448.
