Michigan man killed in accident near Daniel
Three others injured
July 23, 2007

One man was killed, and three other people injured, when the pickup they were in failed to stop at the intersection of US 191 and US 189 at the Daniel Junction on Friday, July 20. Steven P. King, 45, of Flint, Michigan, the driver of the vehicle, was killed in the crash. A man and woman from Utah, and a Pinedale man, were injured in the wreck and taken to area hospitals.

According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, King was northbound on US 189 approaching Daniel Junction driving a 1998 Dodge Dakota pickup truck a little after 10 PM on Friday night. Daniel Junction is approximately 11 miles west of Pinedale. King failed to stop at the stop sign at the “T’ intersection which is required for northbound traffic prior to entering onto US 191. The truck traveled across US 191 and left the roadway where it then vaulted and struck a dirt berm off the highway. Upon impact with the berm the air bags in the vehicle did deploy. Only one vehicle was involved in the accident.

There were three passengers in the pickup truck. The passengers were Kenneth R. Mallow, 39, from Pinedale; and Kevin L. Ivie, 38, and Kim M. Gruszkiewicz, 25, from Payson, Utah. Mallow was seated on the center console of the vehicle, Ivie was seated on the passenger side and Gruszkiewicz was sitting on Ivie’s lap. None of the people in the vehicle were wearing seatbelts.

Mallow and Ivie were hospitalized at St. John’s Hospital in Jackson. Gruszkiewicz was taken to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Alcohol use by King is being investigated as a factor in this crash.

Wyoming Highway Patrol reminds that Wyoming law states that no person shall drive a vehicle when it is loaded, or when there are in the front seat enough people, exceeding three (3), to obstruct the view of the driver to the front or sides of the vehicle or to interfere with the driver’s control over the vehicle. In addition, each driver and all occupants in the vehicle are required to wear a properly adjusted and fastened seat belt.

This is Wyoming Fatal #75. Fatal count at this same time last year was 96.

Follow-up inquiries may be directed to: Sgt. Stephen Townsend, Wyoming Highway Patrol, (307) 777-4306.
