(Big Piney) Smokey Bear and a couple of his friends paid a visit to the after school reading program at the Big Piney Library on Thursday, October 5. About 65 children from kindergarten through fifth grade listened as Nan Stinson, Fire Prevention & Education Specialist for the Bridger-Teton National Forest, read “Smokey Bear and the Campers” and “Smokey Bear Saves the Forest”. After the stories, Smokey Bear was on hand to get lots of hugs and handshakes.

The visit was to recognize “National Fire Prevention Week” which runs from October 8 through the 14. The library holds the after school reading program each week at 3:15 p.m. with stories, snacks and a special theme related project. The project for this program was to make custom Smokey Bear t-shirts. The kids were given crayons and an iron-on picture of Smokey Bear to color. Volunteers were busy ironing the pictures on t-shirts for the kids to wear home. The shirts were provided through the generosity of EnerCrest, who paid for 75 shirts for the special activity.

Librarian Debi Morley said, “It was a great success, probably our most awesome after school program yet this year. The kids were really excited about their shirts and they were all so well behaved.”
