Pinedale Classic Sled Dog Race
The Pinedale Classic Sled Dog Race is back again and will be held Saturday and Sunday, January 6th & 7th, 2001. The race will cover a route of approximately 31 miles from Pinedale to Hwy 352 along the Upper Green River Lakes road to the parking lot at the Bridger-Teton National Forest Boundary. Pinedale Snow Explorers One Lunger 100 Snowmobile Race
The Pinedale Snow Explorers One Lunger 100 Snowmobile Race will be held Sunday, January 7th at the Sagebrush Downs Oval Track near Cora. Machine must be 1973 or older single cylinder. Sublette County Land and Ownership Information Sublette GIS
The Sublette County Graphical Information Systems web site contains a wealth of geographic and land ownership information for Sublette County. Information that can be downloaded includes land legal descriptions and ownership, current zoning, state and federal lands, and a viewer to query a parcel map for land ownership, legal description and zoning. LOCAL FOCUS:
Wondering about what's there to do around here in the winter? Lots! Three sled dog races are slated over the next couple of months, including the IPSSSDR (International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race) of which Pinedale is one of the stage stops. Mushers and their dog handlers will be spending 3 days in Pinedale during this leg of the race from Green River Lakes to Irish Canyon. White Pine Ski Area is open 7 days a week to downhil skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts. There will be a nordic and an alpine ski invitational held there in February. Those who like to x-country ski will find many miles of trails accessible close to Pinedale with beautiful views. Snowmobilers can now sled in most places and will find lots of trail and off-trail riding. The Pinedale Snow Explorers Snowmobile Club has several fun events planned over the next two months including snowmobile races, poker runs and family fun days. Ice hockey and ice skating is available at the Pinedale Skating Rink west of town. In another couple of weeks the lakes should freeze up enough for ice fishing. 

Shuttle services to White Pine Ski Area are available from the Great Outdoor Shop (367-2440) and the Pinedale Cab Company (360-8313 cell or 367-7668). The Pinedale Cab Co will have daily pick-ups at the White Pine Ski Shop at 8:30 AM, 9:30 AM and noon, and at White Pine at 12:30 PM, 3:30 PM and 4:30 PM. Fare to White Pine is $5 per person each way. A Ski Shuttle pass is available.

The Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail from South Pass to Irish Canyon has 4-10" base, from Irish Canyon to Pinedale has 0-4" base, and from Pinedale to the Place has 0-6" base. The Upper Green River area has 1-2 feet base with 12-24" of new snow. None of the CDT is groomed yet. Be sure to check the Avalanche Reports before you go out. Reports today indicate avalanche danger is high (Daily Reports for Wyoming Avalanche Info)

Wyoming Range Snow Conditions
The Wyoming Range has from 6-24" of base with 8-30" of new snow. The Big Piney/LaBarge area has 6-20" of base and Horse Creek has 6-24" base 8-30" new snow. Trails on Horse Creek are the only ones currently being groomed. Avalanche danger is high.

"Pink Eye" Discovered in some Farson and Pinedale area Mule Deer (WY G&F)
Conjunctivitis or "pink eye" similar to the infection that occasionally infects cattle with sore, red and mattered eyes, has infected some yearling mule deer bucks north of Farson. The infection necessitated the Wyoming Game and Fish Department to shoot 15 young bucks near the Buckskin Crossing area north of Farson and five near Fremont Lake north of Pinedale since late November. The deer had been  rendered blind or nearly blind by the infection. The heads were sent to the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory for examination.
  "By removing the deer from the population it helps break the cycle of the disease, and it's the humane thing to do because the deer will begin to starve," said Scott Edberg, Game Warden Supervisor in Pinedale. "This appears to be the worst pink eye outbreak in the area since 1981-82." But the G&F believes the outbreak was not widespread enough to significantly reduce the deer population because only a portion of the yearling bucks were infected. Surveillance of the Buckskin Crossing area Dec. 16-17 failed to detect any more infected deer, and the G&F believes the outbreak probably has run its course. 
   Although it can be many years between pink eye outbreaks in a deer herd, outbreaks typically occur in late fall when young bucks have face-to-face contact while sparring during breeding season, according to Tom Thorne, wildlife veterinarian and G&F Services Division Chief. Outbreaks transmitted by flies have also been documented some years in late summer.
  Thorne said a December pink eye outbreak poses no threat to domestic livestock because flies are dead and face-to-face contact between deer and cattle is unlikely. The disease can also infect elk, moose and bighorn sheep, but has not been detected this fall in those species. He also assures hunters that pink eye does not affect venison quality. Anyone spotting a big game animal that is sick or acting strangely is urged to call the nearest G&F office.

The Daniel Community Center is sponsoring a Fundraising Raffle to raise funds for much-needed renovations for the historic Daniel Schoolhouse. Only 250 tickets will be sold for $20 each. The raffle will be featuring 7 handcrafted items and service donations including a mule deer antler lamp by Jim Kiever, a western mirror by Steve James, a rawhide and pole rocking chair by Ron Kamp, a Canadian Honker painting by Kay Meeks, a leather tissue box by BJ Griffin, a Kokopelli ironworks lamp by Frank Guffey, and a "chips happen" windshield repair by the Windshield Doctor. The big question on everyone's minds lately is, "Is White Pine Ski Area open yet?" The answer is: YES! White Pine will be open for the weekend from 9 am - 4 pm with most of the runs open. The Day Lodge will have the ticket office, restroom facilities and limited food services. At present, the word is they will be open weekends only until Christmas (unless we get a lot more snow), and closed on Christmas Day, and open during Christmas week. This is still tentative, so keep checking back for the latest information.

Lift tickets are $22 All Day, $15 Half Day, and $10 for the Little Spirit Lift only. The White Pine Ski & Sports Shop in Pinedale will be open Friday from 5 pm - 8 pm, and Saturday & Sunday from 8 am - 5 pm for ski and snowboard rentals and sales. The Great Outdoor Shop in Pinedale also rents and sells downhill skis, x-country skis, snowboards and ski boards. They carry a large selection of name brand clothing and winter sports equipment. The Pinedale Board Shop, located at 342 E Pine, rents snowboards for $20/day, which includes boots, boards and bindings. They also have clothing, accessories, and goggles, and you can call ahead for reservations. They are open Saturday & Sunday 8 AM-5 PM. Changes at Knotty Pine Plaza
There's been a flurry of activity lately over at the Knotty Pine Plaza, Pinedale's "mall". The building has a new owner now who is renovating the exterior to even out the look. The new facade will raise the outside walls to the level of the 2nd floor on the west end and add a new roof covering the eastern half of the building. A new Thrift Store has moved into the building and Communications Concepts has relocated to the bigger space which once held the Heritage Office Supply store. Last weekend, Santa paid a visit to the Plaza to listen to the special wish lists of Pinedale youngsters.

Last weekend, the Pinedale Area Chamber of Commerce once again sponsored their "Shop-at-Home" weekend with the Christmas Craft Fair and the Christmas Parade. The Craft Fair, and visit from Santa, were held in the Knotty Pine Plaza.  Saturday, theafter dark Christmas Parade was held with colorful Christmas theme floats driving down Pinedale's main street. After the parade was the traditional lighting of the big tree at the Sublette County Courthouse. Local stores were open late Saturday evening for holiday shoppers and decked out with holiday lights and special sales. We thank the Board Members of the Pinedale Chamber of Commerce who each year volunteer their time and energy to sponsor this fun weekend and encouraging people to visit local stores. The IPSSSDR. Formerly the IRMSSSDR (International Rocky Mountain Stage Stop Sled Dog Race), the name has been changed to the IPSSSDR (International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race. A qualifying event for the Iditarod, the IPSSSDR hosts 30 champion teams from France, Japan, Canada and the U.S. competing for the race’s $100,000 purse, and traveling nearly 500 miles through Wyoming’s backcountry for 11 days. The IPSSSDR will be in Pinedale for 3 days arriving Monday, January 28th and leaving on Wednesday, January 30th. A Dessert Social, sponsored by the Pinedale Area Chamber of Commerce, will be held Tuesday night for the public to meet the mushers and the handlers. The Green River Rondy Sled Dog Race will be held Saturday and Sunday, March 10-11, 2001. This is a 6-dog, 8-mile race trail  consisting of a 8 mile continuous loop over and around the Green River on USFS double wide groomed trails. No head-on meetings.
