Fire Update
Wednesday, July 25, 2001
FIRE DANGER is: VERY HIGH

Fires at a Glance
  • All's pretty quiet for us here on the south end of the Bridger-Teton National Forest. We don't have any active fires, all campgrounds and trails are open, and no restrictions are in effect. The sky is a little hazy from smoke coming from the fire up near Jackson. If you're planning on coming to the Wind River Range, Green River area, Gros Ventres, or the Wyoming Range, things still look great, so come on over!
  • The Green Knoll fire southwest of Jackson near Wilson is approximately 1,390 acres. An evacuation has been ordered this afternoon of 3 subdivisions near the town of Wilson as the fire has begun to move quickly towards homes. An evacuation center has been set up at the Jackson Hole High School by the American Red Cross. This fire is now the #1 priority in the nation for firefighting resources. The town of Jackson and Yellowstone and Grand Teton Parks are unaffected by this fire.
  • To find out more fire info, go to the Teton Fires web site or call the Interagency Fire Information Center at (307) 739-5577.
  • The state of Wyoming Tourism Department now also has frequently updated fire information for tourists and travelers at www.wyomingtourism.org.
  • Our fires on the southern end of the Bridger-Teton National Forest are all under control. The Buck, Fisherman, Rim and Sacajawea fires still have crews on them patrolling for hot spots. One new small fire began over the weekend in the upper Green River area due to a campfire that was left unattended. There are currently NO RESTRICTIONS on campfires, although fire danger is still very high. Please be careful with your campfire if you decide to build one.

Our fire situation on the southern end of the Bridger-Teton National Forest are relatively calm, in contrast to the Green Knoll fire up near Wilson, southwest of Jackson. The Forest Service is still patrolling our old fires for hot spots and will probably continue to do that until the snow flies. The Buck, Fisherman, Rim and Sacajawea fires still are being watched, but are under control. The Green Knoll fire, now 1,390 acres, has begun to move towards three subdivisions of homes. A mandatory evacuation of these subdivisions was ordered today and an evacuation center has been set up at the Jackson Hole High School.

The Interagency Fire Information Center is open up in Jackson for fire questions. You can get information, updated daily, online at the Teton Fires web site, www.tetonfires.com. If you need to talk with someone in person, call (307) 739-5577. We encourage folks to check out the web site first to find the answers to your questions. The folks at the Center are pretty busy right now, so please save your calls for important reasons. You can also get information, updated daily, from the Wyoming Department of Tourism now regarding how fires may affect your planned trip. Their web site is: www.wyomingtourism.org.

There are currently no restrictions on campfires, although we suggest if you don't need one, please don't build one, or be very careful if you do. All trails, campgrounds and roads are open. There is some smoke haze due to the Green Knoll fire up by Jackson, but not too bad our way. Folks planning on hiking the Winds are still encouraged to come. At present, things are looking good and the mountains are beautiful and the fishing is great. Click here for John Ross's fishing hatch report from Two Rivers Emporium in Pinedale.
