A totally white bison calf is a rarity in nature and an omen in Native American lore. The National Bison Association has estimated that they only occur in approximately one out of every 10 million births. A young white calf was born at the Jackson Fork Ranch this week--and it is very, very cool. The bison at the ranch had some strain of cattle bred into the herd at some point, and a white and brown could either produce a white or brown. Two browns could also produce a white. But what is amazing is how white this one is. It was a treat photographing this young critter./djb
