We will miss them
Trudy Fry
Don't you just love the warm weather? The younger group are even
swimming in Fremont. Summer is wonderful when it finally gets here.
We should all shut down our businesses and play for the week and a half
that we know and love as summer. Thanks to all those that are doing
the summer enrichment program at the elementary school. It is getting
rave reviews for students and parents alike. It is a great idea and
we are all hoping that it continues in the years ahead.
Our sympathies are extended to the family and friends
of Marlenn Wise. He was a great asset to our community as well as a
good friend. He will be missed. We are going to miss Ellen Dew. We will
miss her efficiency and knowledge at the lumber store. Her family and
friends and those that worked with and knew her will miss her.

A
small lightning-caused fire on Horse Mountain on the Big Piney Ranger
District has heralded the beginning of fire season. The fire was quickly
brought under control by crews from Pinedale and Big Piney and did not
reach more than about 1/4 acre in size according to Pinedale Ranger
District fire personnel. The Forest Service urges outdoor recreationists
to be very careful with fire as it is already very dry. Please report
any fires or smoke columns you see as soon as possible to the local
Forest Service office or Sheriff's office.
With Independence
Day just around the corner, the Bridger-Teton National Forest urges
local citizens and all forest users to use extreme caution during their
4th of July celebrations and wants to remind everyone that fireworks
are illegal on National Forest lands as well as in Sublette County.

Kelly
Wardell wins Copenhagen Cup Finale
For
those following the official rodeo results, former Big Piney resident
Kelly Wardell has an impressive series of wins in bareback riding.
Kelly won the Copenhagen Cup Finale at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas
last weekend, June 14-16, earning $19,000 and bringing his total
earnings to $56,561. The win qualifies Kelly for a place at the
upcoming 2002 Olympics, where rodeo will be included as an event
for the first time. Kelly Wardell, 38, now lives in Bellevue,
Idaho, but still has family in Sublette County and lots of folks
who are keeping track of his career. Kelly has qualified for the
National Finals Rodeo three other times, despite being hampered
by injuries. Following Kelly's season at these pages on the Pro

Super
8 Motel should be ready mid-August
"If
all goes as planned, we anticipate being open by August 11th"
stated Dave Bell, managing member of the new Super 8 motel being
built on the west end of Pinedale. The three story, 42-room motel,
will have an indoor pool and a hot tub. "The view from
the 3rd floor rooms is incredible" said Bell. "We
plan to put a web camera up on top of the building with a view
of town and the mountains. It will be available online so people
can see what things look like from here. It will be Pinedale's
first web cam!"
The
new Super 8 will be open year round and will be tied in with the
Super 8
central reservation system, offering discounts through the Super
8 VIP membership card. At present, their local telephone number
isn't working yet, but Mr. Bell stated they are already getting
calls from people who want to reserve rooms for late August. For
now, anyone wanting to make arrangements in advance can call Dave
Bell at 307-367-6518 or Lisa Doorn, Super 8 Motel Manager, at
307-367-6257. Once they are open, reservations can be made on
their 1-800-800-8000 phone number or online at www.super8.com.
As Pinedale becomes more of a destination for summer and winter
recreationists, the new motel will add much-needed rooms for travelers
and to accommodate winter skiing, snowmobilers, and the potential
for more conventions in Pinedale. More

they do flips in mid-air off one of their many quarter pipe ramps. No
casual rides here, only action-packed excitement from start to finish!
Gale's "Get High on Life" message, and her continued emphasis
on family and safety in sports, have earned her what some consider to
be the highest honor, "America's Sports Mom". Gale is also
the founder of Anti Drug & Safety in Sports Shows established in
1976. Shows will be held throughout the day for three days.
Quilters
will enjoy the "2001 Quilt Challenge" which will be
part of an ongoing exhibit at the Sublette County Fair. This Quilt Challenge
is open to residents of Sublette County and School District #9. Each
participant will make a 12-1/2 inch block using the fabric in the challenge
packet representing the theme: STARS. Other fabrics may also be used
and the blocks can be pieced, appliqued or embroidered. No fabric paints
may be used. Blocks must be done and taken to the Fair by noon, Wednesday
August 1, 2001 where they will be hung for display. Winner of the Challenge
block agrees to set the blocks together, have quilted, and returned
to the County Fair in 2002. See this year's Fair Book for other entry
details. Winner of the 2000 Quilt Block Challenge was Lynda Houfek of
Big Piney. Participating businesses are
Huckleberry Patch and Heritage Quilts in Pinedale, and Fantasy Fabric
in Marbleton.
The Fair kicks off Saturday morning at 11 am with
an Open Carriage Driving Competition. The Little Buckaroo
Rodeo will be held on Wednesday, August 1st at 7 pm. There will
be novice and open classses, with a Cones and Cross Country course.
The other events will get started on Thursday, August 2nd.
Don't
miss the fun!

Beware
the dangers of lightning
During
the summer warm weather, our weather moves into a pattern of clear days
in the morning with clouds building up to thunderstorms in the afternoons.
Those thunderstorms bring with them lightning, strong wind gusts, and
heavy rain downpours at times. Last Friday, four men in the Jonah gas
field 35 miles south of Pinedale were struck by lightning as the worked
near a gas rig. The four fortunately all survived the incident, and
were released from the Rock Springs hospital after being treated. Anyone
recreating outdoors should be aware of the dangers of lightning and
take appropriate precautions. It is not uncommon for lightning to strike
power and phone lines and travel into homes around here, so surge protectors
with phone and modem protection are recommended on electronic equipment
and computers.

TRUDY'S
TAKE
Trudy Fry
This week was one of great excitement in Pinedale. The rule of
"don't plant the bedding plants until after Father's Day"
was reinforced with the blizzard that happened on Tuesday. The snowfall
began with 30 minutes of horizontal tiny flakes and ended with high
winds,
vertically falling huge flakes. It was fascinating to watch out the
window while standing in front of a warm cozy fire. I am wondering if
I have enough firewood to get through the summer.
The
other event was the raising of the towers for the stairs and the elevator
at the new motel. You got the feeling that they were trying to hurry
because the blizzard had just passed and the clouds were pretty ominous.
Blizzard watching and barn raisings have been the center of western
entertainment for years so it is nice to feel that we are carrying on
a tradition.

a Trip into the Wilderness?
Planning
a trip into the Wind River Mountains Wilderness area this summer? The
428,169 acre Bridger Wilderness lies adjacent to the Continental Divide
of the Rocky Mountains and encompasses the western slopes of the Wind
River Range. This rugged wilderness area is a popular destination for
backpackers, rock climbers, and horseback packers. Please note that
all organized groups (such as Scouts, church groups and clubs), institutional
organizations, and commercial operations are required to have a permit
to visit the Bridger Wilderness. All visitors using pack and saddle
stock overnight are also required to have a permit, which is available
from the Pinedale Ranger District of the US Forest Service. Please be
sure to check with the local Forest Service office on the current conditions
for fire danger, trail conditions, and bear activity before you head
into the wilderness. Fill out a Wilderness Check In form with the Sublette
County Sheriff's Office and sign in at the trailhead as you start your

TRUDY'S
TAKE
Trudy Fry
The
Pinedale gauge for determining the beginning of summer came to my house
the past week. In the middle of the night it occurred to me that there
were several places on my body that were itching. At first the spiders
were blamed and then it suddenly dawned on me that these were MOSQUITO
bites. We now can officially call this weather summer. When do they
start spraying? Soon I hope. I don't look good in welts. In addition
to but not necessarily in the same category as mosquitos, Judy Myers
arrived in town and for those that need advance warning, Bob Everts
and his lovely wife have also arrived. Let the fun begin! (Anyone who
knows a natural mosquito repellant, let me know! E-mail
Trudy)

FOCUS
Memorial Service for Tim

Pinedale
High School Rodeo
Last
Saturday, June 2, 2001, Pinedale hosted the Pinedale High School Rodeo
which includes high school age students from Sublette County. More
than 70 students from Sublette County, other towns all across Wyoming,
Colorado and Utah competed in bull riding, saddle bronc, bareback,
barrels, steer wrestling, goat tying, pole bending, break-away roping,
calf roping, team roping and cutting at the Pinedale Rodeo Grounds
south of Pinedale. Jake Greenwood, from Big Piney, won
1st place in the Boy's All Around event, also placing 1st in Bull
Riding and 3rd in Saddle Bronc. Taylor Selby of Pinedale placed 1st
in Calf Roping. All the participants can go on to State Competition
which will be held in Douglas, Wyoming at the State Fairgrounds on
June 20-24th. Winners at State will compete in Nationals later in
June.
The
Pinedale High School Rodeo receives no funding or support from the
schools. The high school students pay for their own equipment and
costs through fundraisers and help from their families. Awards and
buckles for the rodeo are paid by donations and money raised from
the rodeo entry fees and from buckle sponsors. The American Legion
has been one of the best supporters of the High School Rodeo program.
Some of the money from the entry fees is also used to help pay for
the stock charge and for money awards. Organization and running the
rodeos is all by volunteers from parents, local community members,
and businesses.
Participants
in High School Rodeo compete in 17 rodeo events during the fall and
spring preparing for the local, state and national rodeos. The High
School Rodeo Club practices every Tuesday and Thursday during the
winter at the Sublette County Ag Center north of Marbleton. They welcome
new members and encourage anyone interested in rodeo to come out and
watch.
