One cool morning we set up at 6:15am in the woods about 2 miles south of Mammoth Hot Springs. It wasn't our intended destination, but we pulled over on a small turnout and shut off the car, rolled down the windows and were met with incredible bugling--from all directions! So, we decided, even though the views were constrained for photography purposes, the event was going to be really something. We listened, for over two hours, to bulls calling from all sides. We counted over a dozen separate bulls calling. It was a true symphony of activity. We put the sneak into a small grove of trees and basically hunkered down. We heard and saw cows and bulls moving through the woods all around us as the respective bulls kept their herds pointed in the direction they intended to go. Even though I didn't get any great shots, other than this one bull calling from behind a tree, with his frosty breath, it was an amazing experience. Canon 7d, 400MM F2.8. ISO 1250./djb
