Arnie was right on time--5:30am. Temperature at the house--between 2.1 and 3.7 on my trusty atomic clock/thermometer. As we proceeded west out of Pinedale in the heavy fog, we watched the thermometer in the truck drop to its lowest point of -5F. Our goal was to catch the sunrise on Horse Mountain, and maybe be the first tracks of the new winter.
We weren't the first tracks, but almost. Only two other sleds had made it up Dry Beaver. About 8-10 inches of snow in most spots. The one exception was the "powder bowl", which had ample snow for some great riding.
The sunrise was spectacular, the elk heard heading for cover was another thrill to a great first ride of the year!!
